ATM networks

I am a embedded systems Engr working in a firm which develops and works with embedded real time systems projects.I am currently involved in a project of ATM bank networks(All time Money-ATM).I have done server as well as client part.I want to know how the server and clients are connected physically.I would like to know what sort of error handling I should involve and implement to avoid errors.I have used sockets and TCPIP protocol.
