Can anyone recommend a book or website or give advice regarding the creation of a USB host?

I can recommend that you lay hands on Circuit Cellar Magazine.  They pound on that subject constantly and review products, in depth, that shortcut the hassle you are looking at.   They have a web site that has a lot of the articles (but not all of them) on it.
